Rotterdam, June 2025 – The ERICA project (Environmental monitoRIng through Civic engAgement) proudly announces the release of its multilingual e-booklet on best practices for environmental monitoring. This publication, now available in all partner languages, represents a key deliverable in ERICA’s mission to empower communities affected by fossil fuel industries through citizen science, intercultural engagement, and knowledge sharing.

Funded by the Erasmus+ program, ERICA is a transnational partnership involving academic institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations, and technical partners across Europe. The project aims to strengthen the role of communities in monitoring the environmental and health impacts of fossil fuel activities by providing tools, knowledge, and platforms for active civic participation.

The e-booklet Empowering Communities through Citizen Science, first released in English at the end of 2024, is the project’s first key result. It collects methodologies and examples of bottom-up environmental monitoring initiatives across the EU and beyond. These case studies demonstrate how communities can generate actionable data, raise awareness, and advocate for change in contexts of environmental degradation linked to oil, gas, and coal extraction and processing.

Divided into seven sections, the e-booklet provides:

Simple scientific background on fossil fuels and their environmental impacts;
– A detailed guide to low-cost tools for monitoring air and water pollution;
Legal and health-related standards for evaluating fossil fuel industries-related contaminants;
– Successful citizen science case studies from different countries.

This resource is not only educational but also practical. It equips adult learners, local organizations, and civic groups with knowledge and guidance to launch their own participatory science initiatives. It also forms the foundation for ERICA’s next project outputs – a comprehensive training methodology and an e-learning platform, both set to launch in 2025.

By making the e-booklet accessible in multiple languages, ERICA aims to foster inclusive participation and intercultural competence among diverse communities across Europe.

The e-booklet can be freely downloaded in English, Dutch, French, Italian, Polish and Spanish from the official ERICA website:  www.ericaproject.eu/project/#ebooklet
